Caroline County Public Schools welcomes our newest School Board members Lydell Fortune, Dr. Michael Hubbard, and Allison Sears. Each candidate won their respective School Board election on November 7, 2023 and will begin their four-year term in January.
Lydell Fortune, Mattaponi District, will be replacing long standing board member Nancy Carson. Mr. Fortune was born and raised in Caroline County and is a proud graduate of Caroline High School. He graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in political science and earned a JurisDoctorate from the College of William and Mary. As a college student, Mr. Fortune gained an early understanding of some of the challenges teachers face in the classroom while serving as a substitute teacher in Caroline County Public Schools. He spent a vast portion of his professional career serving as a human resource professional for K-12 education and post-secondary institutions. Mr. Fortune previously served as the Caroline County representative on the Germanna Community College Board as an appointment by the Caroline County Board of Supervisors. He is the father of a 19-year-old daughter, Layah who attends Hampton University and a 12-year-old son, Nicholas.
Dr. Michael Hubbard will fill the Bowling Green seat vacated by Mr. George Spaulding. Dr. Hubbard is the University of Mary Washington Dahlgren Center for Education and Research Campus Director. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Ferrum College, a Masters of Science degree in Management from the Marymount University School of Business Administration, a Masters of Arts in Strategic Security Studies with a Human Security Concentration in West Africa degree from the College of International Security Affairs, National Defense University, and a Doctorate in Education with a focus on Leadership and Organizational Change from Baylor University. He also served as a U.S. Marine from 1985 to 2014.
Allison Sears will be replacing Mr. John Copeland from the Western Caroline District. Ms. Sears is the mom of two children, a wife, and an educational American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter. She graduated from George Mason University and attended the Reynolds Community College interpreter training program. She has worked in the education field in a variety of capacities since graduating from college and has been a K-12 ASL interpreter for several years. Mrs. Sears loves spending time with her family, volunteering in our community, and helping with her children’s hobbies such as CHS Theater, Caroline Little League, and Sign Language Club at LCES.
Caroline County Public Schools also extends a warm return to our re-elected School Board members: Dr. Jowanda Rollins-Fells (Reedy Church District), Mr. Calvin Taylor, Sr. (Port Royal District), and Mr. Shawn Kelley (Madison District).
