Virtual Learning and Accommodations Guide 
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) along with the Assistive Technology Network has adapted this resource from the Indiana Department of Education that lists common daily accommodations for students in brick and mortar learning environments and provides examples of how these accommodations can be applied during virtual instruction.

Family Math is an emerging movement to promote math activities within the context of family relationships and everyday life, from the grocery store to the playground, during breakfast, bath time or bedtime. Education First has posted some great Resources for Families, Parents and Caregivers to Bring Math to Daily Conversations and Activities.

ADHD/Learning Disabilities:

Girls and ADHD
Helping kids with ADHD is a big job. But girls with ADHD face a different set of challenges than boys, and when it comes to helping, parents need an approach that addresses these differences head-on.

Mental Health:

September is Suicide Prevention Month
The best way to prevent suicide is to use a combination of efforts that work together to address different aspects of the problem. The key components are:
          promoting emotional well-being and connectedness among all students.
          creating social supports and connections and 
          Identifying students who may be at risk for suicide and assist them in getting help.

Waivers and Social Security:

How to Better Understand the DD Waiver
October 6th at 7pm
The Center for Family Involvment is hosting this informative session to help you better understand the DD Waiver and determine if your child is eligible to get on the waiver waitlist in VA.\

Disability Benefits: VA’s Medicaid Waivers and SSI
September 21, 2020 at 6:30 pm
Navigating the world of disability benefits can be tricky, time consuming and overwhelming. This workshop will help make that process easier. Join PEATC as they discuss, in clear understandable language, what are VA’s Medicaid Waivers, what are Social Security benefits, who is eligible, and how do I apply.

The Autism Society Central VA has posted it’s Fall 2020 Community Resource List 
The ASCV is an exceptional resource and I urge you to connect with them if you have a family member or support someone on the autism spectrum.

  • Paragon Autism Services

  • Autism Society-Central Virginia (AS-CV)
    Whether you’re new or have been involved in the ASD community for a while the AS-CV is the #1 resource for you and your family. They offer a wealth of information and resources, as well as, social, support and sibling opportunities. Becky Boswell, Bradford Hulcher, Tammy Burns and the rest of the team are committed, knowledgeable and passionate about helping you and your family.   • Community Services Board (CSB)
    The Rappahannock Area Community Services Board (RACSB) provides prevention, treatment, employment and support services for Caroline citizens and families with mental health, substance use and intellectual disabilities. They work collaboratively with schools, law enforcement, and social services. They can also assist you with case management, counseling, crisis services, and general parenting education.
  • Department for the Blind and Vision Impaired (DBVI)
    The department offers a wide array of specialized services, supports, resources and programs for Virginia residents of all ages who are experiencing significant visual disabilities. The DBVI is committed to providing quality services to assist Virginia’s citizens who are blind, deafblind or vision impaired in achieving their maximum level of employment, education, and personal independence.
  • Department of Social Services (DSS)
    and the CSB work very closely together to serve you, your child and your family. They help to ensure that thousands of Virginia’s most vulnerable citizens have access to the best services and benefits available to them, such as: Financial Assistance, Medicaid Waivers, Health Financial Assistance, Family & Individual Services, Services for Children, and Services for Adults.
  • disAbility Resource Center – 409 Progress St, Fredericksburg, VA 22401  540-373-2559
    A Center for Independent Living working to enable people of all disabilities of all ages to reach their greatest potential of independent living. The disAbility Resource Center has joined forces with the Alzheimer’s Association to sponsor a free series of workshops. 
  • Down Syndrome Association of Greater Richmond (DSAGR)
    DSAGR is a wonderful resource. They strive to improve the quality of life for individuals with Down syndrome and their families by providing access to current and accurate information on Down syndrome and by fostering programs that focus on education, community services, public awareness, medical issues, research, advocacy, legal issues and parenting.
  • The Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center (PEATC)     PEATC builds positive futures for Virginia’s children by working collaboratively with families, schools and communities in order to improve opportunities for excellence in education and success in school and community life.
